Defenders of the Amazon Targeted in Ecuador
The Ecuadorian government is taking steps to criminalize dozens of individuals who fight to defend the Amazon forest from deforestation, according to Global Witness.
Land and environmental defenders in Latin America and the Caribbean, including indigenous peoples, are being targeted. With COP30 soon to be held in Brazil, the heart of the Amazon, this move raises concerns about the protection of human rights and the environment.
The Prosecutor's Office, under President Daniel Noboa, has launched investigations into over 60 individuals for "unjust private enrichment" and has frozen many of their and their organizations' bank accounts.
The body of Indigenous campaigner Efraín Fueres is carried through Quiroga, Ecuador, by La Raíz.
