City of Los Angeles Launches Crenshaw Connected, Free Wi-Fi Service

The city of Los Angeles has launched Crenshaw Connected, its first free Wi-Fi program, to address digital inequity in South Los Angeles.

City workers installed 1.5 miles of underground fiber optic cable from Leimert Park Plaza to the Hyde Park Metro Station.

"This is what equity really looks like, and this is digital empowerment,"
said Los Angeles Councilmember Heather Hutt.

The initiative is a partnership between the city, Cisco, the Bureau of Street Lighting, the California Community Foundation, Destination Crenshaw, and Digital Equity LA.

"Watching what happened during COVID was just heart-wrenching and devastating,"
said Council President Marqueece Harris-Dawson, who witnessed digital inequity firsthand during the pandemic.
