Points North: How ‘Bout Them Apples? | Great Lakes Now

Uncovering Rare Apple Genes on a Remote Island

On a remote island in Lake Michigan, old apple trees may hold very rare, never-before-discovered genes, potentially joining the U.S. stockpile of apples to combat future threats.

According to Austin Rowlader from Interlochen Public Radio, Luke Marion is on a mission to find these apple trees on Beaver Island, 32 miles off mainland Michigan.

Marion's process involves cutting last year's growth from the branches of the trees he finds, storing the cuttings in a marked bag and cooler to keep them dormant.

There's a chance these particular apple trees could be very rare.

This discovery is part of the Points North podcast, a biweekly series about the Great Lakes, shared with permission from Interlochen Public Radio.
