Drought conditions in Hawaii have reached Hilo, a city known for its high rainfall. The National Weather Service reports that the entire state is experiencing drought, with parts of Hawaii island in extreme drought and Hilo in severe drought.
Hilo International Airport received only 2.76 inches of rain in September, which is 32% of its normal total for the month. For the year, the airport's rain gauge has recorded 38.17 inches through September, just 46% of its norm.
"If it happens, it seems to be an autumn thing, which would make sense as that is at the end of the dry season for that area,"
said Stall. This is not the first time Hilo has experienced drought conditions, with similar occurrences in January 2023, September-October 2022, and November 2020.
