USC rejects Trump compact

USC Rejects Trump Compact

The University of Southern California (USC) has declined an offer from the U.S. Department of Education to participate in the Trump compact.

Campus Leadership Response

USC interim president Beong-Soo Kim stated in a letter to Education Secretary Linda McMahon that he "respectfully declines" the offer, citing concerns that it would "undermine the same values of free inquiry and academic excellence" that the compact aims to promote.

Even though the compact would be voluntary, tying research benefits to it would, over time, undermine the same values of free inquiry and academic excellence that the Compact seeks to promote.

Other Rejections

USC is not alone in its decision, as at least three other schools, including the University of Pennsylvania, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Brown University, have also rejected the offer.

Department of Education Response

The federal Department of Education was unable to comment due to the government shutdown and resulting employee furloughs.

Implications

The rejection may not help USC's financial situation, as the school is facing a $200 million budget gap.
