Florida lawmakers are pushing to roll back the state's "Free Kill" law, a decades-old statute that critics say blocks justice for families whose loved ones die due to medical negligence.
The current law bars non-economic damage claims, such as pain and suffering.
"This is in no way, shape or form, a bill that is punishing doctors or our medical staff whatsoever," said the bill sponsor, Fort Pierce Republican Rep.
The bill sponsor added,
"This bill is simply to repeal a piece of law that is unjust."
The bill cleared its first committee stop in the Florida House, marking the latest attempt to reform a law that exists only in Florida.
