Salmon spotting season has begun across Vancouver Island, with the peak expected later this month. Pacific salmon are returning to rivers and streams after traveling thousands of kilometers.
Salmon have already been spotted in Goldstream Provincial Park and in the Puntledge and Quinsam rivers, according to the Pacific Salmon Foundation.
"(This) is turning out to be a great year to spot salmon,"
said Michael Meneer, foundation president and CEO. He attributed the favorable conditions to
"ocean conditions have been favourable coupled with significant stewardship and conservation work led by First Nations, streamkeepers, and grassroots groups across B.C."
The number of salmon returning shows their resilience. The foundation hopes people will
"take the opportunity to get outdoors and visit local streams to witness this incredible migration".
