Discovering a New Way to Measure Poverty

Researchers at Rutgers have developed an innovative approach to measure poverty and understand local development needs in areas where traditional data collection methods are challenging or impossible.

To overcome these obstacles, the researchers utilized georeferenced content from Twitter (now known as X) as a poverty measurement tool, providing a new perspective on development from the ground up.

"This approach could transform how international aid and development work operates,"

said Woojin Jung, an assistant professor at the Rutgers School of Social Work and the principal investigator of the study. He added that organizations could gain real-time insights into community needs by analyzing online conversations, rather than relying on expensive and infrequent surveys.
