A football coach with no tennis experience stepped in to save the Shawnee Heights girls tennis program from being cut two years ago.
The program's existence was uncertain when the team had no coach, but a football coach intervened, changing everything.
"I got a few other girls to start like, 'Hey, we really need a coach or we're not going to have a season, and tennis (is) very important to me,'" said Shelby Watson, a player on the team.
Watson's high school tennis career ended with a loss in the 5A state regionals, but she considered it a victory to have been able to play for Shawnee Heights.
The coach's decision to take on the tennis program has made a significant impact on the team and its players.
