Due to the severe drought in Maine, with minimal rainfall and hundreds of wells running dry, the state's water situation is a major concern.
A viewer, Douglas, asked the CBS13 I-Team about the measures being taken by water bottling companies, such as Poland Spring, to address the issue.
The Maine Department of Environmental Protection requires companies with significant groundwater wells to monitor water levels closely and reduce or halt pumping if levels drop too low.
According to the DEP, no water bottling operations have been mandated to reduce or stop withdrawals during the drought.
Poland Spring says it has already made cutbacks on its own, implementing a "significant" reduction in withdrawals at its Clear Spring site in Hollis, as well as cutbacks in Fryeburg and other locations across Maine, as of September 1.
The company's voluntary reduction in water pumping is a step towards conserving Maine's groundwater resources during this period of drought.
