Hat Yai clean-up removes over 300 tonnes of waste on first day of operation

Clean-up launch in Hat Yai

The Natural Resources and Environment Ministry launched a major clean-up operation in flood-hit Hat Yai, Songkhla province, to remove debris and restore public areas. The campaign began after severe flooding left streets, homes, and public spaces covered in garbage, mud, and damaged belongings.

First-day results

On the first day of operations, teams collected more than 300 tonnes of waste, including garbage, debris, mud, and contaminated materials from affected neighborhoods. Collected waste was transported to designated facilities for proper disposal to prevent further health and environmental risks.

Manpower and equipment

Around 780 personnel from the ministry and associated agencies joined the operation, supported by trucks, excavators, high-pressure water sprayers, and other cleaning equipment. Local authorities and volunteers also participated, helping to clear streets, houses, and commercial areas to speed up recovery.

Areas targeted

Cleaning teams focused on key urban zones in Hat Yai, including main roads, markets, public buildings, and heavily flooded residential communities. Workers washed building exteriors, pavements, and road surfaces to remove sludge and reduce the risk of disease outbreaks.

Health and environmental concerns

Authorities emphasized quick removal of waste to limit contamination of water sources and reduce mosquito breeding grounds in the post-flood environment. The ministry highlighted that accumulated debris and mud could trigger respiratory and gastrointestinal illnesses if left uncleared.

Next steps

Officials stated that the large-scale clean-up would continue in the following days until major public areas and badly affected communities are restored to safe conditions. The ministry plans ongoing coordination with local administrations to monitor remaining waste, repair damage, and support residents in making their homes habitable again.
