The Haryana government has dismissed several senior sports officials following two tragic incidents in which young basketball players lost their lives. Both athletes reportedly died after iron poles holding the hoops collapsed during play.
According to officials, the state government initiated immediate action, removing the top district sports officers and other responsible staff members. Authorities stated that preliminary investigations revealed negligence in maintaining sports infrastructure, prompting disciplinary measures.
A government spokesperson said new safety protocols will be enforced across all training centers and stadiums. The reshuffle, they added, aims to restore accountability and ensure that such incidents do not recur. The department has also ordered a state-wide audit of sports facilities to identify structural weaknesses.
The incidents sparked anger among athletes and local communities, who demanded stricter oversight of equipment safety. Several sports associations welcomed the government’s quick action, calling it a necessary step to protect players’ lives.
“Player safety cannot be compromised. Every sports facility must be inspected regularly,” said a senior official from the state’s sports council.
