Refused is a Swedish hardcore punk band formed in 1991 in Umeå, Sweden. The band's founding members included vocalist Dennis Lyxzén, drummer David Sandström, among others. They initially aimed to perform beyond their hometown and release a 7-inch record, which never materialized. Their lineup evolved over time, with significant members contributing to their distinct sound and political messaging.
Refused is renowned for their politically charged, far-left and non-conformist lyrics. The band was at one point associated with the straight edge subculture, advocating a lifestyle free of alcohol and drugs. Musically, they pushed boundaries within hardcore punk, incorporating experimental elements such as electronic music, jazz, and improvisation, which set new standards for the genre.
The band released several influential albums, including their groundbreaking 1998 album The Shape of Punk to Come, which integrated diverse musical styles and became a lasting influence in punk music. After disbanding in 1998, Refused reunited in 2012 and continued to perform until officially announcing their final tour recently. In 2024, they were inducted into the Swedish Music Hall of Fame, recognized for revolutionizing the hardcore scene both musically and conceptually.
Refused's lyrics often advocated Marxism, animal rights, and other revolutionary themes. They used their music not only to entertain but also to provoke thought and encourage societal change. Their legacy extends beyond music into the cultural and political realms within and outside Sweden.
"Refused pressed the boundaries of what hardcore can be with electronic elements, jazz, and improvisation, setting a new standard both musically and conceptually."
