“Eyes whisper before they scream”: Vision loss in diabetes can be prevented by spotting early warning signs, says doctor

Silent Damage to Vision

Diabetes can affect the eyes long before any noticeable symptoms develop. According to medical experts, the disease can quietly harm the retina, leading to irreversible vision loss if left unchecked. This can occur even in younger adults living with diabetes.

Early Warning Signs

Dr. Ajay Dudani, CEO of Mumbai Retina Centre, explained that early signs often appear subtly.

“Eyes whisper before they scream,” he said, stressing that mild blurriness or vision fluctuations can signal the early onset of diabetic retinopathy.

These symptoms may seem minor but can indicate damage to the tiny blood vessels in the retina caused by prolonged high blood sugar levels.

Preventive Measures

Routine eye screenings for people with diabetes are essential. Detecting changes early allows doctors to intervene before permanent damage happens. Dr. Dudani emphasized that good blood sugar control, a balanced diet, regular exercise, and annual eye exams can substantially reduce the risk of vision loss.

Long-Term Outlook

When diabetic eye disease is caught in its initial stages, treatments such as laser therapy, injections, or surgery can preserve eyesight. However, once vision is severely lost, it rarely recovers fully, making prevention the strongest defense.

“If patients stay alert to changes in vision and monitor their diabetes regularly, most cases of blindness can be avoided,” added Dr. Dudani.

Author’s summary: Early detection and routine eye care can prevent diabetes-related blindness by identifying subtle retinal changes before serious vision loss occurs.
