Twilight's heartthrob trades in his vampire fangs for a Shakespearean role.
In the fall, the 24-year-old actor will star in "Remember Me," a romantic drama that also co-stars Emile Hirsch and Megan Fox. In the spring, he'll be in "Remember Me" again, this time on the London stage.
There, he'll take on the role of the lead in a production of Shakespeare's "Measure for Measure," with the Royal Shakespeare Company.
Pattinson, who grew up in Hammersmith, London, has long been a fan of the Bard.
"I was one of those kids who would do all the Shakespeare plays," he says. "I loved 'Romeo and Juliet.' I loved 'Hamlet.'"
He's been acting professionally for about 10 years, getting his start with small roles in film and television in the UK.
But it was after he landed the role of vampire Edward Cullen in Stephenie Meyer's book series, which was later adapted into the hit film "Twilight," that Pattinson found himself catapulted to international stardom.
Now, with the success of the first film in the franchise, Pattinson is stepping into new territory.
"I've been doing a lot of research on the play," he says, "reading about how the play was written, how it was performed in the past. I'm trying to get a sense of how it was meant to be played."
He's been rehearsing with the company for weeks, working on his British accent and perfecting his lines.
As he prepares for the role, Pattinson says he's trying to tap into the play's themes of love and redemption.
"I think it's a really beautiful play, and it's really interesting to explore the themes of love and morality," he says.
Pattinson is also eager to explore the challenges of playing a Shakespearean role.
"I think it's going to be a really big challenge for me," he says. "But I'm excited to try and rise to it."

Pattinson is also looking forward to the experience of working with the Royal Shakespeare Company.
"They're a really talented company," he says. "And I think it's a great opportunity for me to learn and grow as an actor."
For Pattinson, the experience will be a far cry from his previous role as a vampire.
"It's a really different world," he says. "I'm looking forward to it."
