Downey High School's football team earned its first CIF-SS championship in program history by defeating Long Beach Poly 24-21 on Saturday morning at Cerritos College.
The Vikings, led by head coach Ray Barriere, improved to 13-1 on the season with the win. Downey was led by quarterback Noah Fifita, who threw for 217 yards and two touchdowns. Running back Trevor Shaw added 123 yards on the ground and a score.
Long Beach Poly, which had been seeking its second CIF-SS title in four years, was led by quarterback Malachi Nelson, who threw for 227 yards and a touchdown. Wide receiver Jordan Johnson added seven receptions for 122 yards and a score.
“This is an incredible feeling,” Fifita said after the game. “We worked so hard all season and to come out on top like this is just amazing. I'm so proud of my teammates and coaches. We did it, we're champions.”
