‘Stumble’ Review: NBC Doubles Down on Mockumentaries With Spirited Sitcom About Junior College Cheerleading

Jenn Lyon, Taran Killam, and Kristin Chenoweth star in the new NBC mockumentary Stumble. Fans of the 2000 teen cult classic Bring It On who know the cheeky opening cheer (“I’m sexy, I’m cute! I’m everything you’re not…”) might enjoy this fresh cheer-themed comedy.

Stumble offers a quirky look at the competitive world of college cheerleading, including the risks of injuries and the challenges of setbacks. The show follows Courteney Potter, a deadpan cheerleading coach played by Jenn Lyon (known from TNT’s Claws), who is abruptly fired from her role at Sammy Davis Sr. Junior College in Wichita Flats, Texas. Her dismissal comes after a viral video from a victory party involving alcohol, the squad, and her awarding “Best Booty.”

Despite this, Courteney finds a new coaching position at a junior college in the fictional Heådltston, Oklahoma—a town famous for its candy-button factory but lacking a cheer team. The town’s name is notably difficult to pronounce.

Notable Guest Appearance

The first two episodes were available for review, revealing a highlight to come: Emmy winner Jeff Hiller (Somebody Somewhere) guest stars as Augustus, the candy factory owner.

Undeterred by the lack of a team, Courteney embarks on a determined search for talented cheerleaders—mostly from the lower ranks—to build her next squad.

“I’m sexy, I’m cute! I’m everything you’re not…”

Author's summary: Stumble creatively combines sharp humor and heart in a mockumentary style, spotlighting the trials and triumphs of junior college cheerleading through the resilient coach Courteney Potter.
