Everything You Need to Know About Slavia Prague

Slavia Prague, our next opponents in the Champions League, have solidified their position as one of the Czech Republic’s top football clubs over the past decade. The reigning Czech champions are aiming for their first victory against us in their fifth attempt.

Club History

Founded in 1892, Slavia Prague enjoyed a golden era under Scottish manager Johnny Madden, winning 12 of the first 19 Czech league titles. They secured their 13th championship in 1947 but faced challenging times afterward, including two relegations in the 1960s as they struggled to regain their former success.

Modern Era and Success

After the Czech Republic gained independence in 1993, Slavia began competing for titles again. Their long wait ended in 1996 when they captured their first championship in 49 years, boosted by key players Karel Poborsky and Vladimir Smicer.

Since then, Slavia Prague has become the second-most successful club in the country, securing seven additional league titles. They also qualified for the Champions League for the first time in the 2007/08 season.

"Slavia Prague are next up for us in the Champions League, whose exploits in the Czech league over the past decade have seen them firmly establish themselves as one of their nation’s best teams."
"They finally became champions again in 1996, helped by the performances of Karel Poborsky and Vladimir Smicer."

Despite recent successes, Slavia is yet to secure a win in five attempts against us in European competition.

Summary

Slavia Prague has evolved from historic dominance to modern challengers in Czech football, now aiming to overcome previous European hurdles to secure their first win against us.
