The Christian community in Kolkata, India, has launched an initiative aimed at ensuring dignified burials for everyone, regardless of their economic background.
The commemoration of All Souls’ Day now extends beyond a single day through the new project called Shamman Samadhi, meaning “dignified burial.” This initiative seeks to honor people with dignity at the time of their death.
The Christian Burial Board of Kolkata described Shamman Samadhi as a compassionate and inclusive effort, bringing together representatives from various Christian denominations.
“The goal of the initiative Shamman Samadhi is to guarantee that everyone, no matter their economic background and situation, is given a dignified and free burial.”
According to Agenzia Fides, the information service of the Pontifical Mission Societies, a part of Kolkata’s historic Christian cemetery in Mullickbazar, near Lower Circular Road, has been allocated for families unable to afford burial costs. This area is also open for those who died abandoned or without family to care for them.
The Missionaries of Charity, founded by Mother Teresa, actively participate in this initiative, reflecting their mission to assist the dying and abandoned.
