Heading into the matchup with Penn State, Ohio State appeared ready to dominate. The Nittany Lions, coming off four straight losses, seemed vulnerable, while the Buckeyes hadn’t faced much of a test since early in the season.
However, by halftime, Ohio State led by only three points, 17–14, after a chaotic final sequence. Penn State mounted a long drive ending in a touchdown, then immediately recovered a fumble by CJ Donaldson with under two minutes left. The play sparked controversy.
“Forward progress was clearly stopped, but the referees didn’t blow the whistle,” said former NFL referee Terry McAulay, who criticized the officiating crew for missing the call.
McAulay emphasized that the play should have been ruled dead, allowing Ohio State to keep possession. Video evidence showed Donaldson had ceased moving forward when the ball came loose. Instead, Penn State took advantage and scored another touchdown before halftime.
The questionable ruling shifted momentum entirely in Penn State’s favor. As expected, social media erupted with angry reactions from Ohio State fans, many voicing frustration over the officiating.
This controversial officiating call before halftime swung the game’s momentum to Penn State, leaving Ohio State supporters outraged and questioning referee accountability.
