Edgar Wright Talks About Walking Away From Ant-Man

Edgar Wright has built an impressive filmmaking career with titles such as Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Baby Driver, Last Night in Soho, and The Running Man. He was once attached to direct Marvel’s Ant-Man, but creative differences led him to part ways with the project.

Wright’s vision for the film leaned toward originality, while Marvel sought something that fit into its expanding cinematic universe. The studio ultimately used much of his script but brought in a director more aligned with its goals.

“You’re not still losing sleep over that, are you?” Wright joked when asked by The Playlist about leaving the Marvel project.
“I didn’t regret my decision to leave at all,” he said. “I had started working on that film long before even Iron Man came out. By the time it happened, they had defined their brand, their continuity, and even a specific filmmaking approach. So the opportunity to do something truly unique was disappearing.”

Since then, Wright has largely avoided the superhero genre, choosing instead to focus on stories that showcase his distinct creative style and direction.
