Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment Review

Zelda's adventure set in Hyrule's ancient past succeeds as the best Hyrule Warriors game to date. Playing Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment, I naturally thought about Tears of the Kingdom's story and how Age of Calamity portrayed Breath of the Wild's backstory.

While Zelda games have not always prioritized story, I felt recent entries missed the mark, despite their potential. I appreciated the idea of a hidden narrative behind Tears of the Kingdom, set post-Breath of the Wild, but key elements felt lacking. On paper, Age of Imprisonment promised to deliver that deeper narrative and fill in story gaps with a more emotional impact, yet execution was crucial.

Like Tears of the Kingdom, success depended on both storytelling and solid gameplay. Fortunately, it turned out to be a personal sleeper hit and my game of the year.

Assuming some familiarity with Dynasty Warriors, this review explores how Age of Imprisonment builds on that foundation.

"Zelda's adventure in the ancient past of Hyrule sticks the landing to be the best Hyrule Warriors yet."
"It's all well and good then that it's a sleeper hit for my personal game of the year."

Author's summary:
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment successfully deepens Zelda's story with strong gameplay, becoming a standout and fulfilling long-held narrative promises.
