How did Jacob Elordi perform as The Creature? Fans of Guillermo del Toro understand the excitement around his long-anticipated adaptation of Frankenstein. The Oscar-winning director, known for his compassionate depiction of monsters in films like Pan’s Labyrinth and The Shape of Water, has nurtured this project for nearly two decades.
Despite my enthusiasm, one change during production initially lessened my interest. Now, after watching the film—available on Netflix from November 7—I want to share my thoughts.
Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein became a notable entry in the upcoming horror slate once Netflix acquired it in 2023. However, just before filming began in early 2024, Andrew Garfield withdrew citing "scheduling conflicts," and Jacob Elordi replaced him as The Creature.
It’s important to clarify that I never doubted Jacob Elordi’s talent. His haunting presence in Euphoria and strong performance as Elvis Presley in Priscilla impressed me greatly. Nevertheless, Andrew Garfield remains one of my favorite actors.
“Jacob Elordi taking over from Andrew Garfield initially gave me pause, but his portrayal in the film has definitely shaped my perspective.”
Overall, the casting change challenged my expectations but ultimately added a compelling dimension to the film.
Though initially doubtful about the recasting of Frankenstein’s Creature, Jacob Elordi’s performance transformed my view, proving his portrayal both haunting and memorable.
