Dan Trachtenberg, known for revitalizing the Predator franchise, has expressed his interest in taking on Kevin Costner's 1995 sci-fi film Waterworld. Before the theatrical release of Predator: Badlands, Trachtenberg spoke with Collider about his approach to continuing Waterworld.
Rather than proposing a direct film sequel, Trachtenberg envisions a revival of Waterworld as a video game:
"The thing about Waterworld that I want to see is a video game. I want to see an open-world third-person action-adventure video game that is not a remake of the movie, but is a sequel to the movie. That's what I want to see."
This approach is not without precedent. Several video games have served as official continuations of popular movies, such as Ghostbusters: The Video Game. Released in 2009, the game is set two years after the events of Ghostbusters II and features a new character joining the team to investigate paranormal events in New York City.
By choosing the medium of an open-world action-adventure game, Trachtenberg aims to expand the story and world of Waterworld in an immersive, interactive way rather than through traditional cinema.
Author's summary: Dan Trachtenberg proposes a bold new direction for the Waterworld sequel, imagining it as an open-world video game that builds on the original film’s story instead of a movie remake.
