What’s happening for Remembrance Day in Niagara-on-the-Lake

Remembrance Day Observances in Niagara-on-the-Lake

Across Canada, the time is approaching to honour the soldiers who have fought and continue to protect the country, from the First and Second World Wars to the present day. In Niagara-on-the-Lake, businesses are distributing poppies, and many residents wear them with pride on their jackets and shirts.

Poppy Displays and Locations

Poppy displays can be seen throughout the community, including at the Niagara-on-the-Lake Museum, the Historic Court House, the RiverBrink Art Museum, and the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 124 on King Street. The museum began its poppy drive in early October, placing 75 wreaths around the heritage district.

Legion’s Poppy Drive and Role

Al Howse, president of the Legion, shared that members have been actively preparing for the Remembrance Day commemorations.

“Everything,” he said with a laugh.

The Legion’s poppy drive started on October 11, collecting donations and distributing poppies across the streets.

“We accept donations at that time for our poppy trust fund to support veterans and their families,”
said Howse. Poppies are available in about 200 businesses, with thousands already handed out.

Upcoming Commemorative Events

Niagara-on-the-Lake will host a variety of events leading up to and on November 11 to honour those who served and sacrifice made by veterans.

Author’s summary: Niagara-on-the-Lake actively honours Remembrance Day with widespread poppy drives, public displays, and community events supporting veterans and their families.
